Family films from the 80s... a blast from the past!

If you ask me what film I remember most fondly of my childhood, it must be The Goonies (1985). I remember it to be super funny, extremely endearing and crazily captivating. I never saw it again until very recently, when we were thinking of what to watch on our weekly winter family film night and I managed to convince my family to see this childhood favourite of mine. Admittedly, I kind of expected my memories to be blurred -- afraid to have persuaded everyone to sit through a clumsy 80s adventure with probably bad acting and see-through special effects (only to satisfy their mama's sentiment) -- but... no such thing! The Goonies was GOOD, even better than expected!

Sitting on the edge of our sofa, all of our kids (and we!) were carried away by this awesome adventure of four friends. The film has a surprisingly modern pace, is at times scary (Casper and Ava were maybe a bit too little to be able to deal with Sloth), but of course everything is coming together in a wonderful, happy ending.

Fabulous family films from the 80s

On a roll, we also watched some other fabulous family films from the 80s:

  • Dirty Dancing (1987). The romance! We loved it. Baby is adorable.

  • Coming to America (1988) a hit with the kids, and honestly, this is a film I can watch a million times and still enjoy.

  • Ghostbusters (1984) funny, a bit scary, and with the best theme song!

  • Flashdance (1983) great music and 80s fashion and as uplifting as ever!

On our (well, my) list to see, some with all my kids, some with just the teenagers, are:

  • Top Gun (1986) -- I had (have?) a huge crush on Maverick and can still sing along with the entire soundtrack album.

  • The Gremlins (1984) -- although I'm a bit afraid I will still find it scary!

  • Back to the Future (1985) -- such a great storyline, and with Michael J Fox!

  • The Karate Kid (1984) -- we have seen it a few years ago, but it's time for a refresh.

  • Beverly Hills Cop (1984) -- another Eddie Murphy classic that I'm looking forward to watching again.

  • (I know E.T. (1982) ought be on this list, but I found that film so incredibly sad, I don't think I can ever see it again...)

Of course, I would love to know about your favourite childhood films. Please list them below, add the date and what you loved most about it!

PS I could't resist to list my favourite 80s television series. Do you remember:

  • Fame (1980) -- Leroy! Doris! Bruno!

  • The A-Team -- BA! Face! Murdock! Hannibal!

  • Miami Vice -- The fashion of Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs is just fabulous.

  • Knight Rider -- KITT! Michael Knight!

  • The Cosby Show -- Now the series has a nasty taste to it because of Bill Cosby's conviction, but at the time I loved that family!

  • Familie Ties -- again, Michael J. Fox!

  • Magnum -- not the ice cream ;). With the famous moustache of Tom Selleck.

  • MacGyver -- clumsily clever.

  • Dynasty -- remember the Carringtons?

  • Happy Days -- with The Fonz!

  • The Love Boat -- the reason why I will always find cruises romantic.

  • Chips -- perhaps not very well known, but I loved these two handsome motorcycle officers.

  • Airwolf -- coolest!

PPS Les Choristes -- another wonderful family film.
